It may sound strange, but it’s hard for me to believe that Fall is truly here and we are nearly at the end of our first CSA season. It seems like just last week (actually May 30th) we were nervously delivering the first week’s boxes and trying to figure out what all we might have forgotten. Though as we look out over the main garden, it is very clear that the seasons have changed, other than the leeks, the only things to be seen are dead, spent plants and white tunnels, protecting the more cold hardy crops (beets, turnips, salad and kohlrabi.) Obviously it is time to move inside and see what our first season in the High Tunnel will provide for the next couple of months.
So next week is our final delivery for the 2006 Summer CSA season. Please make an extra effort to remember your empty box next Tuesday. If you are not joining us for the Winter Share we will bring your produce in plastic bags next week, so you won’t be stuck with an empty box all winter. If you are signed up for the Winter Share, then you can proceed as normal and we continue our “weekly meetings” through the end of December.
It’s a little hard to start thinking about next season already, but we will start accepting reservations for the 2007 Summer season on November 1st, so those of you who are interested in joining us again can reserve your spot any time after that date.
You will find your final opportunity to enjoy farm-fresh turnips in your box this week. For those of you that haven’t yet learned to appreciate this humble vegetable, try mashing it with a little garlic, butter and milk (or cream if you’re feeling decadent) alone, or in combination with potatoes it makes a marvelous side dish. You can also roast them with other root vegetables for a truly seasonal “comfort food.”
Available as an option this week is broom corn. This ornamental is related to field and sweet corn, but is actually a variety of sorghum and was used in the past for broom making. It makes a lovely seasonal arrangement in a tall vase or as part of a fall centerpiece for your table.
